I plan and run our projects for the community, from applying for funding through to evaluation and development. I am trained as a facilitator for the innovative, drama-based Creative English programme, which supports the community’s need for confidence in speaking English. We provide a warm welcome, with new learners joining us most weeks.
Our work has developed as we have listened to our community and learned of their needs and priorities. In addition to our established Creative English classes we have run a successful numeracy programme this year, building confidence in numbers in everyday life. We run a Toy Library, Art and Craft groups and a weekly Cook and Share. We have a community garden, comprising three raised beds alongside our Community Hub, where local families grow and harvest fresh produce.
It is a privilege to be part of this diverse and wonderful community in Burngreave.
I first heard about The Furnival by word of mouth. I speak Arabic and began as a student learner of English and numeracy. I took part in all the activities: Health and Wellbeing classes; art and craft groups; library sessions sharing books to support our development; cooking sessions; and gardening in the community garden. These have helped me improve and develop my English communication skills and build my confidence.
I also had the opportunity to volunteer at The Furnival, welcoming learners from different backgrounds, understanding their needs and helping to support them.
Over time, I have developed my skills, progressed and am now working as a community support worker for The Furnival. I enjoy working with Julie, who supports my development. Benefiting the community is a highly rewarding experience.
During the summer holidays, I run sewing activities with the learners and am grateful for the chance to engage with people from different backgrounds and help develop their skills.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, sewing, going for walks and visiting friends.
I joined the team as a Learning Support Worker in January 2024 with a background in ESOL and a drive to make a contribution to adult learning within Sheffield's diverse communities.
Having worked with a wide range of speakers of other languages in past teaching and support roles, I have seen first-hand what a barrier language, and even more importantly, confidence, can be to people in their everyday lives. It is a joy and a privilege to be part of our community of learners at the Furnival and the delivery not just of ESOL but crafts, cooking, health education and much more besides.
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family and when time allows, getting out to gigs and performing as a singer, keyboard player and songwriter. I'm very proud of my adopted home of Sheffield and its diverse and vibrant social and cultural landscape.
I joined The Furnival in January 2024 as a Learning Support Worker who’s passionate about helping students unlock their potential and thrive in their learning journeys.
Before joining The Furnival, I taught maths at both school and university levels. This experience gave me valuable insights into supporting learners of all ages and backgrounds. Alongside my role here, I also work as a freelance interpreter, which allows me to connect with and support even more people from diverse communities.
I enjoy learning and developing my skills, particularly in web editing. I’m also proud to co-manage The Furnival’s website, ensuring it stays up-to-date and reflects all the great work we’re doing.
When I’m not working, I love spending time with my family and discovering the beauty of South Yorkshire on our days out. Whether it’s exploring local trails or uncovering hidden gems, I find inspiration in the stunning landscapes and vibrant community around us.
I believe that with the right support, every learner can achieve great things, and I’m honored to be part of that journey.
