The Furnival

Building Community - Learning Together

Our activities are for women only. They are held at either Verdon Recreation Centre or our Welcome Space at 195 Verdon Street, S3.

Our Activities

 English Classes

When: Mondays and Fridays, 10:00 am to 12.00 pm

Our weekly English classes aim to improve language abilities in reading, writing, speaking, and creative use of English. They are ideal for individuals seeking to enhance everyday communication or explore creative expression, catering to all levels of proficiency. These classes are especially beneficial for ESOL students, as they strive to increase confidence and fluency in a nurturing and engaging environment.

 Well-being Wednesdays

When: Wednesdays, 10:00 am to 12.00 pm

On Wednesdays, we prioritise activities that promote well-being, helping everyone focus on mental, physical, and emotional health. It's a time to relax, recharge, and take care of ourselves.

Cooking with Amal

When: Wednesdays, 11:00 am to 12.30 pm

Every Wednesday, we host a Cook & Share session where a community member selects a meal to prepare. We provide the ingredients, and then the culinary adventure starts. It's an excellent opportunity to discover new recipes, exchange cooking techniques, and savour healthy, tasty meals together.

Drop in to our Welcome Space at 195 Verdon Street, S3 to chat about getting involved.

We are open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

About us

Our main focus is to find creative ways to engage with the local community in Burngreave and surrounding areas. Since the launch of our flagship Creative English programme in 2017, we have worked with over 600 women and children from diverse backgrounds, building confidence in language and improving understanding of daily life in a new country, through our varied programme of activities. We seek to offer a warm welcome and support for newly-arrived, migrant women helping them to make connections, grow in confidence and build the skills they need to support their families.

Our Creative English programme is a relaxed, fun way to learn spoken English, equipping our learners to speak with confidence in everyday situations. Many of our learners no longer need an interpreter when they speak to their GP and can travel and shop independently.

Our weekly Craft Café offers a wide range of arts and crafts activities in a supportive environment. We practise language as we learn new skills and build friendships.

Cooking with Amal – Cook & Share Sessions Every Wednesday a member of our community selects a meal they would like to cook. We buy the ingredients, and the cooking begins. This is an opportunity for us all to learn from each other, cooking healthy, delicious food and enjoying the sense of home that is created when we serve food that our mothers and grandmothers taught us to cook. We always have a willing group of volunteers to chop, stir, set tables, and wash dishes. We share the food with around 20 women and children.
